This just in: The network infrastructure is still largely owned by corporations so even if you have your own server, you're still at the mercy of your data passing through places you may not be so happy about.

Radio is so last century. I use a mesh network of hacked “smart” refrigerators.

Still, you own the server and can migrate or use another route. The problem was never just that some company is big, but the influence some big companies can have.
