Lefty gun nuts like to act as though gun control was invented by the Reagan admin to crack down on the Black Panthers when they tried to organize their own community protection groups in alternative and exclusion to the California police, which to be clear absolutely happened, but!

This narrative ignores how para-state communities have long distinguished weaponry for communal defense and personal use of weaponry, key example of the US being that gun control in the old west was extremely common, and often far more strict than what is proposed today. Back then you had to surrender your arms to the sheriff before you were allowed to go literally anywhere else in town, like a gun control coat check.

Literally only white Americans are capable of inventing this almost magical thinking about how great and awesome guns are and how they're nothing but great and awesome for oppressed communities and how attempts to limit their presence in society are entirely a modern abberation invented for the exclusive purpose of a lockdown of state control of the people.

Related to that: A really good video by Johnny Harris that also talks about how the idea of a militia got defined in US law: https://youtu.be/wnBDK-QNZkM

Oh and also a relevant episode of the revisionist history podcast: https://www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/revisionist-history/guns-part-2-getting-out-of-dodge
