I really wish the gampad controls were better. Which I know is a dumb thing to want for a game as complex as this.

How'd you judge the Steam / GUI version? I did like one playthrough of the original a long time ago, maxed out at 200 dwarfs and then eventually stopped, just to never touch it again because I could not be arsed to learn the controls & UI again. I like the depth of DF but there's titles like Odd Realm or Songs of Syx that are much easier to get into after taking a break.

Much much better with mouse support. Still not perfect, definitely needs tweaks but DFHack helps with some of that. Much more playable now

Does Steam on Linux offer the same controller settings? You can basically map gamepad buttons to any action of the keyboard / mouse and save it as a layout that will be activated each time you launch the game.
