This is the second time I've referenced it in two days, which is weird, but Neil Stephenson's The Diamond Age has people who play NPCs in games as a job. Having worked in a call center, I imagine the process is pretty similar. And it wouldn't be terribly hard to alter voices so they are a close match between plays.
