IIRC, Tom Clancy's The Division gameplay trailer had a moment where one of the guys in the crew had to leave, but he was able to check up on his crew and call in a supplies drop for them via his real world smartphone. It seemed like an interesting idea, to incorporate a smartphone/tablet as another way to 'play the game.' I think there might have also been the ability to hack into CCTV/security cameras and give callouts/info to your crew about what was inside a building, on the street up ahead, or the city block. They ended up cutting from the game, a few months after the gameplay trailer came out.
It's an intriguing idea to find ways to incorporate other screened devices into the mix of gameplay, but I think it wouldn't be utilized that often. What would be the strongest reason to allow others to help out in this fashion? I can see how this would appeal to couples or friends, where one is really into video games and the other isn't. They could feel like they are working together to accomplish the mission/objective.
As for HellDivers 2, I can't quite imagine where and how having a companion app for the game would work out and be utilized.
