Try uploading the image without text. If you use text it will just create a link. If you don't enter text, it will display the picture, as long as it's not too large of a file.

I can confirm it does not work with animated gifs or large files, and you also can't link to an image -- you must use the image upload button so it's hosted on your instance. Here's an example of the code.

For lemm.ee it's 100kB but you can also link external images which I assume shouldn't have a file size limit. https://lemm.ee/post/25065
