It was a little weird having both pay and wallet existing.

Not really. See Apple Pay and the Wallet app on iOS. Google just doesn’t know what the fuck they are doing from one day to the next. As someone pointed out, this ruins existing branding at physical stores and tap to pay consoles. All they had to do was realign the use of each term the way that Apple, Samsung, and other vendors do.

I really don't understand how they can see another company doing things right and still be this lackluster. Copying the good things their competition does it a good thing sometimes.

Bad comparison. There is no such thing as the 'Apple Pay app'. Everything is done through the Wallet app, Apple Pay uses the wallet app.

I thought the wallet was google pay.

So is GPay something else?

Google Pay was rebranded to Google Wallet. GPay is Google’s Venmo equivalent and a separate service.
