I'm no expert on ergot, but I'd place a small wager on it being involved with the dancing plague and the meowing nuns
Otherwise probably just boredom. There was jackshit fuckall to do back then. Not like now, where you have to spend 3 hours a day in traffic and 9 hours a day fixing your completely fucked npm installation
I'm pretty sure npm (node/js) can cause mass mental something. I'm just not sure what it will be, and why it hasn't happened, yet.
That's a really interesting list.
I'm surprised how many are presumed to be stress when so many people show the same symptoms.
My guess for a lot would be social, herd mentality. That probably lines up with your boredom idea too.
