As a manual QA, is writing unit tests a good way to build on coding skills?

Ask your boss if there are paths for you to learn automated testing. It's a somewhat common career path for manual QA to become an SDET.

No. If your goal is to move towards automated testing, see what language is used by the most popular automated frameworks and pick up a beginner's tutorial for that language.
