Also, what's the phrase in english for support and encouragement to keep going when someone is going through a difficult time? In chinese say "加油" (literally: add oil ie. add fuel to keep going) or in french we say "courage", don't know what the phrase is in english.

Normalcy. Not to pretend that nothing is happened but to hang out like you would anyway. Whether that is to play a game or watch a movie something distracting that isn't out of the ordinary.

I think the issue is that losing a job has a different urgency then others. If I immediately lost my job most of my discomfort would be in what I'm going to do in terms of rent and further living. So maybe the first thing I'd want is to hear that I have some support or safety, like a place to crash if I couldn't pay rent.
