The conservative party are facing one of two paths in the UK right now. They are trying to delay an inevitable recession until after the 2024 general election. The most likely case is that Labour wins the next election and will be the government who “causes a recession”, which could secure the Conservatives the elections afterwards. Or the other option is that the Conservatives win the election and they can tank the recession and hope that the general public forgets about it by the time the election comes around again.

I know this comment is poorly worded but I hope you can understand my point.
