Thanks for the reply mate.

I did actually sign up for Mastodon the other day, thought I’d get my preferred username sorted out before the rush for it.

I figure both Twitter and Reddit are on borrowed time but I’d be lying if I said I understood the fediverse just yet.

Will save this tab for tomorrow and get it all checked out!

@hasteee haha that's one of many differences between Fediverse and gated silos, you don't really need to rush for a username, you choose a server you think is well maintained and fits your ethos and hope for the best, the biggest servers aren't necessarily the best choice. Right now the #threadiverse is groaning under the weight of new users, and because it got attention so suddenly, the servers are often struggling to cope with the increased traffic. that will settle down, but right now aussie.zone seems to be doing well (aus.social Mastodon server was in a similar position when Space Karen bought Twitter). I just love that I can have a conversation on the "equivalent" of a Reddit thread, from my most used account on the "equivalent" of Twitter, and have it all in the same timeline. It can be good to separate accounts out, sure, but I'm experimenting here and liking the results so far.

I guess I'm saying don't think of it as just a Reddit replacement, start thinking of the Fediverse in a different way, though having an app which shows you Reddit style interface and has those features at its centre, will also be great, they just aren't here yet =)
