As much as I desperately want this to be true, I'm just gonna chalk it up to tumblr nonsense until a source gets posted.
It's real! More like, "we're not really sure what we saw" but it was believed to be two different species of male octopus mating.
Not much online because it happened in 1994. Found a New York Times article about it, but this one was a more fun read:
