I like how they know they're going to leak but using the threat to drum up media attention.

Even if Reddit did pay, what guarantie is there that they won't just leak it anyways? Not paying any hackers ransom is system admin 101.

That's not true with established ransomware gangs. They have a reputation to uphold, and as soon as there is a news article about them not paying up, all victims stop paying up.

True. The damage is already done. The only value it can be extracted from it is to know the exploit that lead to the breach.
