Perth is weird when it comes to Covid. We rode out 2020 and 2021 mostly as normal (with closed borders). A few tiny outbreaks but it never got a real toehold. It's so different to the Melbourne experience.
Then when we had 95% vaccination rate, the border opened up at the start of 2022. Over the year, we mostly caught up with the rest of Australia with cases / deaths thanks to Omicron. Case numbers before Omicron pale in comparison, and we had a level playing field for that variant. The mentality of the local population is still mostly that we rode through the pandemic practically untouched. Despite the fact that most of us contracted the virus at some point and recovered.
People really don't take the virus seriously here at all. We never really had a proper lockdown. Just a few minor "stay at home please" periods. It's super rare to see anyone masked these days. We really only wore them for a few weeks after each of the mini outbreaks.
