Removal of piracy communities (self.lemmyworld)

Earlier, after review, we blocked and removed several communities that were providing assistance to access copyrighted/pirated material, which is currently not allowed per Rule #1 of our Code of Conduct. The communities that were removed due to this decision were:

We took this action to protect lemmy.world, lemmy.world's users, and lemmy.world staff as the material posted in those communities could be problematic for us, because of potential legal issues around copyrighted material and services that provide access to or assistance in obtaining it.

This decision is about liability and does not mean we are otherwise hostile to any of these communities or their users. As the Lemmyverse grows and instances get big, precautions may happen. We will keep monitoring the situation closely, and if in the future we deem it safe, we would gladly reallow these communities.

The discussions that have happened in various threads on Lemmy make it very clear that removing the communites before we announced our intent to remove them is not the level of transparency the community expects, and that as stewards of this community we need to be extremely transparent before we do this again in the future as well as make sure that we get feedback around what the planned changes are, because lemmy.world is yours as much as it is ours.

What the HECK is with the people complaining and downvoting... some of the things that struck me as weird about the lemmy.world community are coming into sharp focus. @lwadmin transparency and responsiveness is fine and admirable, but you don't owe these people anything lol

Many people are here due to what the Reddit admins did. If the same issues with admins are experienced here, then people will need to look for a better alternative to Reddit than Lemmy.

“Here” should be the fediverse, not all in lemmy.world. Ask yourself why the lemmy.world volunteers should accept liability blindly? They are responsible for what goes on in their servers. If you want to make your own rules, literally go and start your own instance… I’m sure when it’s your name on the hook you’ll be fine with “anything goes” on your server.

Say what you want but Reddit is still hosting these communities so Reddit is currently better than Lemmy in this regard. I will continue to look for a better alternative to Reddit due to the authoritative behavior of their admins.

That's one thing that is constantly overlooked, Reddit IS and will remain "better" in this regard because they have commercial backing and revenue to hire lawyers and put up legal fights. "Film studios lose bid to unmask Reddit users who wrote comments on piracy" isn't going to happen in the Fediverse because most instances don't have the resources to start the fight, nevermind win it.

This isn't a bug on Lemmy, it's a feature. It's exactly why we're here. A robust legal team requires a lot of money, and only corporate suits can finance that. If you don't want someone like Reddit controlling everything and want a community focused space, you have to accept piracy isn't going to be there.

If you don't like that, you're more than welcome to try and take on their legal liability so they can keep the piracy up (if that's even possible).

The fuck are you talking about? Lemmy.world has defederated from other Lemmy communities that are about piracy. Those Lemmy communities that are about piracy still exist and are part of Lemmy.

Are you entirely certain you understand what the difference is between Lemmy and Lemmy.World?

It's a bit like the difference between the United States and San Fransisco if that helps at all...

What reddit did:

Charged money to people who were adding value to their platform
Lied
Refused to improve their platform and blocked others from improving it for them
Supported child pornography until they got in trouble for it
Probably more that I can't think of right now

What lemmy.world did:

Didn't want to host piracy content

Can you really not see the difference?

Why make assumptions for other people? Everyone have their own reasons for leaving Reddit. I left Reddit due to their admins displaying elements of authoritarian behavior and will leave Lemmy for the same reason. The search for a better alternative to Reddit continues.

Tell me who "the admins" of Lemmy are. Because they sure as fuck aren't the same people as the admins of lemmy.world (in no small part because the admins of lemmy.world are an actual group of people who exist rather than the figment of a confused imagination.)

Saying "the admins of Lemmy are displaying elements of authoritarian behaviour!" is exactly as meaningful and appropriate a statement about the current situation as saying "the admins of The Internet are displaying elements of authoritarian behaviour!"

Maybe you should make sure you know what the fuck Lemmy and Lemmy.World are before you try to have an option about them...

You should set up your own instance (of Lemmy or whatever else you choose). You can run it with no authoritarian behavior, as you like, and invite all the people from this thread to come along.

Edit: Also, when you do set it up, let me know where. I'd like to go there, create an account, tell you how you need to run it, and passive-aggressively threaten to leave if you don't do what I say. 😃
