Thanks for giving us a topic to discuss - hoping this community will pick up eventually.
100% necessary character that I see being the true conflict/reason that Danny finally goes to Westeros. We saw what happened when they left his character out of the show, and I think it was the 1st big mistake that led to contrived plot points D&D had to come up with to still fit in George's overall plan.
I like this take! I guess I am puzzled by his inclusion because (to me) it feels like it came out of nowhere.
Granted, I only realized/discovered R+L=J in forums, missing all the clues in the first book. 🤷🏻♂️

I mean, all the elements in the backstory are there, so It didn't come out of nowhere, but I agree that it could not pop up and not be missed. (I didn't see any of these things before a second read.)
While on the subject, a friend wrote a pretty solid essay that covers the possibility that Aegon is real and has been part of Vary's plan from the first book.
