Dude's an idiot that has done nothing but make one bad decision after another. Instead of facing disciplinary action by the US military, the dude escapes to one of the most hostile and insular countries in the world. Brilliant.

I can’t imagine what he is going to experience over there. They are not kind to Americans and likely would have been significantly to face disciplinary action from the US.

The last American captive that North Korea had was returned to the US after 17 months of captivity, was in a coma, and had clear signs of abuse. He died shortly after his return.
