While it’s good to think things through without jumping to conclusions based on partisanship, this is very wrongheaded.
First, your assumption that the presidio is mainly used by local residents is not correct. It is the main viewing area for the Golden Gate Bridge, which is a major national and even international tourist attraction that is usually considered must-see for anyone visiting the city from elsewhere.
Secondly, you seem to be unaware that there are many smaller NPS properties all around the country that are not national parks or monuments, including national seashores, national historic parks, etc. The presidio’s status is far from unusual. It’s also fairly clear that this particular park is being targeted because of Trump’s animosity towards California and it’s residents.
Finally, even if you don’t think it makes sense for the NPS to be involved in this kind of thing, the president does not have the authority to decide this. The Presidio trust was created by congress and the executive branch was lawfully ordered to manage it. Eliminating it is a clear violation of the law and constitution as with his other unilateral cancellation of lawful programs. This is not just about the presidio, it’s a constitutional crisis. If the executive branch no longer obeys the other branches of government then it is not substantially different from a dictatorship, and this is far more important than whether or not the presidio is federally maintained.
