Every soldier should be deterred by death. However, risk taking is inevitable in war and people will die. Still, that doesn't mean that soldiers should just YOLO into the battlefield as part of a thoughtless meat wave to find artillery positions.

Fearless zealots just make easy targets and really only come in limited numbers. The pace of war always exceeds the time it takes to properly brainwash and train elite troops.
