This is real, by the way. Ulysses S. Grant visited Japan in 1879, and this is from a visual biography authored by Kanagaki Robun and illustrated by Kobayashi Eitaku.

I just saw the pic and read the date and thought "Fucking neat"
On the cover page (1, to right corner) the American flags are hung upside down
Page 27 kind of looks like the guy on the horse is deflecting a bullet with his saber.
It would be hilarious if the anime trope of swordsman deflecting bullets with fancy bladework was based on a myth that Americans were doing that during the civil war.
