How does this help Trump? It seems like almost every decision he makes is in furtherance of himself or his brand, why would this one be an exception?

Because Trump's main occupation and source of funds these days is crypto grifter, and he uses his side gig as POTUS to ensure the crypto grift keeps going. This guy is the Patron Saint/Martyr of crypto. His Tech Bro benefactors wanted this, and he delivered.
