If the UV step didn't work, it's likely either due to the UV source, vessel the sample is in, or purity of the starting material.
It's surprising how easy it is to get some pretty decent UV lights for reactions. But penetration is a big factor in those reactions.
I've seen some flow setups do pretty well.
