That tradition of nautical theatrics continued.
When crossing the equator or prime meridian, some sailors would have a sort of party for morale and tradition. In these parties, sailors would dress up and have theatrical ceremonies, usually involving a trial presided by King Neptune and his court(played by sailors of higher rank).
These events often feature cross-dressing and a degree of humiliation for those who are crossing the line for the first time, incliding paddling of the ass with various things. It was common, but is now less so, for a degree of rough hazing to occur(resulting in physical harm or even death); that is largely discouraged officially.
There is a higher degree of merit and promp if you cross the equator and prime, or anti-prime, meridian; which may be purposefully navigated towards by the captain.
Other than those crossings, the primary means of staving off boredom is masturbation, games of various types, and working out in the modern navy.
Damn, I've never set foot on a ship but that last paragraph makes me wonder if I've been a Navyman all along.
