I can't believe that was ever real. I saw the movie and there's just no way they animated all of that with such a horrible design, and then went back and redid everything.

He's in almost every shot of the film.

I mean, it's not like they manually sculpted him every scene. They probably referenced a 3D model file. Swap that out and do some touch ups and you're golden

When King Kong (2005) came out, I got a decent chuckle about thinking how much I wanted King Kong and Gollum models to be swapped.

The whole rig had to have been different. The shape of everything from the eyes to mouth nose and ears were different spots. All the shadows would be different too. Thats a lot of reprocessing.

If they really did go back change it, they did a damn good job. Kudos to the team.

I still like to believe that was a marketing gimmick to get people to spread the word about the movie and that they never actually intended to use that design because all publicity is good publicity. But knowing the fact it's Paramount, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they actually thought that was a good design.
