It's understood Rupert wants Lachlan to retain control over the companies to ensure they remain influential conservative political forces, which he sees as key to their profitability.

The headline is a little distorted from reality. He has legal documents with a defined succession plan, but the key here is that he wanted to change it but was unable to due to the nature of the irrevocable trust it was originally put in. I guess that's not a clickbait-y headline.
