I've had more success with bbswitch and bumblebee, however I have tried many of the other options and configurations with limited success. Maybe it is time to look back at this or just leave well enough as is.

I also had some success with a separate 1 configuration that let me run only on the dedicated GPU (dGPU), but with such an old computer designed to use the dGPU as a secondary option, it seemed overkill.

Finally, there has been an occasional, rare need to write to /proc into the path of my dGPU in case things get a bit messy, but that was rare between some updates or changes.
