It’s been a conspiracy theory for some time. NPR even did a piece on it

Some conspiracy theories turn out to be true. Did people on the ground at the time see things? Then maybe they know what they're talking about.
Do we disregard evidence just because the conclusion it could help draw would be uncomfortable? Then we cement our biases. "There is no evidence that." "I mean no evidence that I haven't dismissed for violating the conclusion I want."
