It keeps asking me spend my knowledge point but I would rather not.

You have to spend it before you can gain progress towards a new knowledge point.

I'm not sure it's a bug, but it's something they presumably might change in the future.

It's basically trying to stop you from wasting effort doing stuff ... because you won't get progress towards an additional point until you spend your current point.

Just spent it on XP.
