I would like to know that. I would also like to know what the joke the same fuck told at the same event about black people carving Jack-o-Lanterns out of watermelons was.

I hope @[email protected] can enlighten us as to what both jokes are.

According to the modlog, his comment was about how “all the r-slur takes in this thread are why many people hate lemmy, and you guys do get that he’s a comedian doing an act at a conference, right?”

[–] FlyingSquid 2 points 1 month ago

Hm. Doesn't sound like much of a joke to me.

[–] dcat 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

i didn’t watch any of it, so i have no idea about the jack o lantern joke. but i did reply regarding the other one

[–] FlyingSquid 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That was the "joke." He said black people carve Jack-O-Lanterns out of watermelon instead of pumpkins.

Feel free to explain why that's funny and not just a racist saying something racist.

[–] dcat 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

well, that’s a really shitty joke, if that even.

i don’t know why you’re expecting me to explain why it’s funny

[–] FlyingSquid 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is you, right?

That's why I'm expecting you to explain it. You're the one excusing the guy.

[–] dcat 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

excusing the guy isn’t synonymous with finding his jokes funny.

the guy is an entertainer putting on a show.

[–] FlyingSquid 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I see. And that means anything he says is acceptable? He can tell a very explicit, highly-detailed story about a violent rape of a child, making it clear that he knows exactly what it's like to rape a child, and that's fine because he's an entertainer putting on a show?

If not, please explain where the line is.

[–] dcat 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

his job is to be funny. sometimes the jokes land, sometimes they don’t. being pissed about a comedian making a bad joke is like being pissed at a band for playing a song out of tune.

and the kind of hyperbole you’re engaging in, is the exact thing i was referring to in my original comment.

[–] FlyingSquid 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That doesn't tell me where the line is.

If racism isn't the line, where is the line? If he makes jokes about the explicit child rape is it over the line or not?

[–] dcat 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

there is no line, as long as it’s funny. though being able to make an awful subject funny, is hard.

[–] FlyingSquid 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Got it. You think a long, detailed story about raping a child that makes it obvious the comedian has done so does not cross the line as long as the comedian makes jokes while telling it.

I'm sure, as you know, 'funny' is entirely subjective. Therefore, as long as the comedian thinks it's funny, since they're the one telling the joke, it does not cross the line.

This is based on your own reasoning, unless you'd like to clarify why the detailed child rape story with jokes isn't acceptable.
