A woman discovered her house had been broken into by a burglar who hung out her washing, put her shopping away and cooked a meal on her stove.

It sounds like he was homeless, and felt guilty about what he was doing. So in his mind, he tried to do things that he hoped would make up for the wrongs he was committing.

At least, that's the impression you get from reading the article.

It's sad and touching. Feels like this is a good person in a bad place. An ideal candidate for rehabilitation. Some people just need a little compassion and a helping hand.
