What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

I mean a free open-source project's gotta get money someway or another. At least they're nice enough to give you the option to turn it off.

Mozilla is making millions of dollars each year.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yep, no one is disputing that, the issue is where those millions comes from....

Google.

If Firefox is to survive they need independant income strearms outside of Google.

I wouldn't be so worried about that. Google actually needs to fund Mozilla, so no one can claim that they have a monopoly on browser rendering engines. Mozilla will always get some funding, and they will always ensure that it has some user base, no matter how small, just so they can escape antitrust regulation.
