I didnt know what this was and just looked up some gameplay...is this for real? It looks absolutely terrible and like it was made 30 years ago. Is that like part of the theme somehow?

EDF was never meant to be visually good, as part of its charm is spamming the shit of weird ass bugs and aliens for you to attack, and be able to run on low spec hardware.

basically to them, quantity/variety > quality of enemies

The camp is a large part of the appeal. Think Japanese sci-fi B-movie that never takes itself too seriously. If you can appreciate bargain bin monster movies, you'll probably dig the goofiness of EDF.

Gamplay-wise, it does get a bit repetitive, but the more recent titles have improved on that somewhat by allowing for more organic progression without having to do quite so much grinding for armor and weapons.

Yes, actually, it is part of the charm. The series started back on the PS2 and still kinda looks like that. Instead, they get to use fancy bright lighting for the weapons and lasers, and hundreds of enemies on screen at the same time, with each of them blowing up into hundreds of tiny pieces. It's a very bonkers game, just focused on being a fun horde destroying experience. And it's themed as classic monster B-movies with alien invasions and legally distinct Godzillas.

Look at EDF Iron Rain

Higher visuals = less enemies on screen due to performance restrictions

People hated it

The gameplay of the EDF games is pretty fun honestly, it does feel different from many modern games, but it's honestly kinda refreshing.
