I wear holes there because my feet are at the top of the size range for standard socks, and with one foot larger than the other it only wears on that one side. The fabric at that point gets stretched thin so it is more vulnerable to abrasion, I don't think the toe nails are the main culprit. If you do wear holes regularly I find it actually helps to darn a patch over the top before there is actually a hole there, the extra protection tends to stop it wearing through.
