Hello new Lemmy friends!

Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.

The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.

Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.

We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

Ooo yay, a fan. I have some Q’s: Why is an NFL playing a game in Brazil? Why did NFL Canada host Birdie there? Does anyone during this time of uncertainty and peril going on in the world want to watch internet strangers having excessive “organized fun” right now? Do these campaigns or whatevs work in the positive from a marketing dollars stand point? What does the NFL gain from these influencers? I am not a sports fan, at all, nor do I know any personally.

Well, I can try and answer the best I can lol the NFL is trying to push an international fan base because heaven forbid only Americans watch football and soccer be the most watched sport in the world. They have initiatives all over the world to host games in "sister cities" assigned to the teams (see: https://www.neworleanssaints.com/news/new-orleans-saints-france-nfl-international-marketing-global-markets-program).

They are especially trying to push into Canada and Mexico since they are more likely to be able to get to games. I think NFL Canada didn't do enough research as their IG only has 136k followers , which tells me that their social media team is lacking, considering the regular NFL IG has 30m. I don't think sending Birdie would make a difference because if they aren't already a fan, it would be hard to convert middle aged moms. I'm convinced Birdie only became a fan because Shine incentivized her. If you live in a big football town, it's hard not to become even a casual watcher. Sundays are for football. My friends don't follow football but if we go to any bar or brunch it's inevitable football will be on. Merch is sold at every Walmart or Target.

And finally, the NFL turnS a blind eye to domestic abuse and DUIs from their players, I don't think they care about optics. People will go into debt to go to a game, and they know it.

I agree. I don’t think there is a chance in hell Birdie is influencing anyone to become a football fan.

Maybe they will try because of her influence, but realistically, games are about 3 hours long. I cant imagine a person who only tuned in because an influencer told them so will have the attentiom span or tolerance to watch a game they barely understand lol

She probably hardly even pays attention 😂

What the NFL doesn’t know is that they just picked a couch potato who is addicted to screens. If Shane and Sarah can put themselves or their kids in front of a screen they will stare at it. This lazy, unproductive privileged woman should not be elevated.

Because she knows diddly squat about football, other than how to cut up a t-shirt and make a halter top and amass copious amounts of branded clothes. And by amass, I mean she accepts whatever freebies come her way.

If anything she’s making me NOT want to be one because it’s so infuriating that someone who has been a fan for half a season is getting all these opportunities and she’s just a fake.

Thanks for taking the time to explain :)

No problem. I'm a sports nerd and I'm just bumming around killing time before my gym class starts lol

Follow up…are you a Canadian NFL fan? Is that common? I imagine no different than American hockey fans. We hockey here but it’s not really synonymous.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

I'm actually not! I live in Chicago, so we are football obsessed over here lol hockey is pretty popular here too with the Hawks but yeah once football starts that's it.
