Hello new Lemmy friends!

Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.

The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.

Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.

We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

(Posted this in the old thread but it bears repeating lol) Have fun, girlie! It cracks me up how little awareness she has about the world around her. I would have said no sooo fast and I'm a hardcore NFL fan who loves to travel abroad. Nothing against Brazil, I would love to visit, but if the NFL is giving out these advisories... I'm staying my ass home.

Have fun, girlie!

Wow. Just read the Canadian government website re travel warnings for Brazil. It’s s very scary. Also, and I quote, “avoid using cell phone in public” whatever shall she do. Note, São Paulo is one of the top crime spots.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The thing with these events too is that the criminals assume it's rich people visiting, and they aren't wrong. I'm not saying she's gonna get kidnapped or anything but petty crime goes way up and you have to have street smarts. Those are hard to get unless you grew up needing them...and she didn't lol

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

She’s said she’s nervous walking to her car in TO so this will send her over the edge

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Oh lawd. I'm not Canadian but I've never ever felt unsafe anywhere in Canada! You guys seem so nice lol and from what I read, crime is lower. At least lower than Chicago (although that's a whole other exaggeration in itself).

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Have lived here all my life and have definitely felt unsafe here, that increases every year.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

Yeah of course! Didn't mean to downplay anything, as a visitor I'm sure it's way different than actually living day to day. I do know Canada is having a housing crisis right now as well as an economic downturn because of inflation. That obviously comes with elevated crime, which is very unfortunate and a whole other bag of worms.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago

Crime rates are a lot lower here - I’m not saying there is no crime but I’ve never felt unsafe in downtown Toronto or any other big Canadian city. Due to the lack of housing there are a lot more people living rough but you just have to keep your wits about you. She’s witless so that is impossible.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Do you think she read that and prepared to NOT show signs of affluence/wear jewelry/use her phone? 😂😂😂

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago

Can’t wait to see this 😂. She is one of those people who tries to wear her wealth. Her bleach blond hair and frozen face screams I have $$.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

The players aren’t bringing their families but NFL Canada hands out the freebies to the Influencers who don’t bother following what’s going on in the world, load them on a plane and off they go all decked out in their merch looking like tourists.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I feel like they are going to be sequestered in their rooms, and that sucks. I wouldn't wanna be in a brazilian city in a hotel room. I dont think the NFL Canada is going to unleash them into the wild, but who knows 🤷🏽‍♀️ they obviously don't do their research lol I wouldn't travel 10 hours just to sit in a hotel, go to a game and go home but I'm not in my yes era enough.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

For someone who has never travelled outside of Canada and the US (besides Iceland) this was not a good choice for her. Even very experienced travellers avoid and/or take extra precautions when it comes to countries under travel warnings. I feel like this experience is just going to make her not want to travel outside her comfort zone even more which is too bad because she has the money to do some incredible travelling if she wants. This whole situation just highlights her ignorance, entitledness and sense of being untouchable.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Even when I visit family in my hometown in Mexico (pop 5.5 mill for the metro area), I am SUPER careful. There is a travel warning to the city, as it's not a resort town or one filled with many tourists. I am able to speak the language, so I avoid speaking English in most places. I'm pretty street smart and know the city well but still avoid taking ubers or flashing anything expensive. My phone stays in my forward facing anti theft bag. I walk with purpose and make no eye contact. I take all these precautions as someone who BLENDS into the local population. I can't even imagine how she is going to be out there.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah - but we pay for our trips, and save, and plan. This is a freebie that makes her feel like a big deal and makes for great content. She won’t care if she doesn’t get to see any part of Brazil, I’m sure she didn’t really care anyway.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Seriously, why do I have a feeling that is exactly what she is going to do, fly 10 hours to another country/continent to solely go from airport - hotel - football game - hotel - airport. And if she does actually explore the city I love the thought of what she will look like to people in the street with her phone out, or with her phone not out not knowing how to interreact and be immersed in the world.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Her phone is gonna get snatched out of her hand in 2.5 seconds. I don't even keep mine out in public transportation or keep it on the table while I eat. Snatch and grabs are waaaaay too easy.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago

Imagine the cry fest if that happened. It’d be like when her Instagram account got locked or whatever happened and it was the worst thing to ever happen to her

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago

Manifesting this to happen

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

She said they aren’t going home until the weekend. How incredibly boring would that be? I can’t see Shane being able to offer any protection - lol! I can only imagine the clothes she packed for the trip!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

They will be protected by the stench coming off his shorts. He travelled 10 hours in a plane with them let’s see how many more hours/days he used them

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I was gonna post this pic too! She thinks she’s so funny and quirky, oh that silly birdspapaya. God I can’t stand her.

She’s gonna get such a reality check. Or maybe she won’t because she’s just so oblivious.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

More proof it’s Sarah’s world and we’re all just living in it. She’s an Eagles fan so then everyone is an Eagles fan!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

I bet there were 1-2 people with a shirt/hat with the Eagles logo on it or something. She was probably the only one on the plane in a matching Eagles sweat suit 💀

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago

But she’s in her ✨yes✨ era 🙄

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ooo yay, a fan. I have some Q’s: Why is an NFL playing a game in Brazil? Why did NFL Canada host Birdie there? Does anyone during this time of uncertainty and peril going on in the world want to watch internet strangers having excessive “organized fun” right now? Do these campaigns or whatevs work in the positive from a marketing dollars stand point? What does the NFL gain from these influencers? I am not a sports fan, at all, nor do I know any personally.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Well, I can try and answer the best I can lol the NFL is trying to push an international fan base because heaven forbid only Americans watch football and soccer be the most watched sport in the world. They have initiatives all over the world to host games in "sister cities" assigned to the teams (see: https://www.neworleanssaints.com/news/new-orleans-saints-france-nfl-international-marketing-global-markets-program).

They are especially trying to push into Canada and Mexico since they are more likely to be able to get to games. I think NFL Canada didn't do enough research as their IG only has 136k followers , which tells me that their social media team is lacking, considering the regular NFL IG has 30m. I don't think sending Birdie would make a difference because if they aren't already a fan, it would be hard to convert middle aged moms. I'm convinced Birdie only became a fan because Shine incentivized her. If you live in a big football town, it's hard not to become even a casual watcher. Sundays are for football. My friends don't follow football but if we go to any bar or brunch it's inevitable football will be on. Merch is sold at every Walmart or Target.

And finally, the NFL turnS a blind eye to domestic abuse and DUIs from their players, I don't think they care about optics. People will go into debt to go to a game, and they know it.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (4 children)

I agree. I don’t think there is a chance in hell Birdie is influencing anyone to become a football fan.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Maybe they will try because of her influence, but realistically, games are about 3 hours long. I cant imagine a person who only tuned in because an influencer told them so will have the attentiom span or tolerance to watch a game they barely understand lol

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago

She probably hardly even pays attention 😂

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago

What the NFL doesn’t know is that they just picked a couch potato who is addicted to screens. If Shane and Sarah can put themselves or their kids in front of a screen they will stare at it. This lazy, unproductive privileged woman should not be elevated.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

Because she knows diddly squat about football, other than how to cut up a t-shirt and make a halter top and amass copious amounts of branded clothes. And by amass, I mean she accepts whatever freebies come her way.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago

If anything she’s making me NOT want to be one because it’s so infuriating that someone who has been a fan for half a season is getting all these opportunities and she’s just a fake.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for taking the time to explain :)

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No problem. I'm a sports nerd and I'm just bumming around killing time before my gym class starts lol

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Follow up…are you a Canadian NFL fan? Is that common? I imagine no different than American hockey fans. We hockey here but it’s not really synonymous.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

I'm actually not! I live in Chicago, so we are football obsessed over here lol hockey is pretty popular here too with the Hawks but yeah once football starts that's it.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Now this is reassuring. The local police are setting up stations in the stadium to assist women who are victims of violence ! Really ?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

Unfortunately, instances of domestic violence go up globally during sporting events. Most notably, soccer but I guess Brazil is taking measures just in case.
