Back when it came out I don't remember any marketing for the movie and any marketing I did see was very immature (farts and weed)
Looked up some dates on Google: it premiered alongside 007 Casino Royale (opened a week before I think) and with Denzel Washington's Dejavu opened the same day. Pursuit of Happiness opened a week or two after.... so tough competition at box office.
The marketing I saw mainly kicked up around the same time as late-night "stoner comedy" was starting for the night.
Even with Jack Black, that was late-night adverts during adult time blocks. That's hitting a certain niche that, while they might be loyal, aren't going to be putting masses of asses into seats.
Poor marketing is the only thing I could have thought of, as coming off the back of School of Rock, a music themed Jack Black film should have been box office gold
