Opinion. It makes no sense to me that a non-politician would get briefings on anything.
Opposing opinion: it's actually a very good idea to get other opinions, especially for international crises. Who else has the experience to advise the president besides other presidents?
Of course, no one would seek trump's opinion on anything because he's kind of an idiot. Bush, Obama, and Clinton? Sure. Even Carter, but he's old so maybe don't bother him.
But there was no mention of asking their opinion on something, just of briefing them on the situation.
That's the point of it though. These guys talk occasionally if they want to. If you had a job that literally only 45 other people had in history, you would call occasionally too.
