That flag was a navy flag. I'm not sure if spiked helmet of the German army and navy flag fit that well together.

The US also fought against that country among other reasons because said German navy sank a ship with 1200 passengers, including 128 US-Americans.

Confirming kiwi lads got gassed to fuck and thrown at machine guns by the ruling class. Source, 3 out of 4 of my great grandads.
