There’s no such thing as “crossing illegally” when you’re seeking asylum. Asylum seekers are allowed to cross the border any way they can; they just have to report to immigration authorities once they get in.
Can you cite the law on that?
They have a right claim asylum once they get in but that doesn’t mean it’s illegal to keep them out.

Note that this is a treaty the US signed so it takes precedence over every other law.
