Automatically creating a shadow account for everyone on Instagram?

Even allowing people to follow that account?

Sounds like they really wanted to push Threads out the door in a big way.

Threads isn't "successful", they just happen to own the social graph. Why can't people see this?

That's success. You can make the best social platform in the world, but it will fail if no one joins it. Organically growing a platform from the bottom up is difficult. Part of what made Facebook so successful when it started was Zuckerberg basically automatically signed up everyone with a harvard.edu email address.
