Honestly, thats a good answer. For people that report to me, I want them to eventually get my job. I don't want to do my same job forever. That means they can advance and I can move up too.
It's not a very original answer, though. It's the interview equivalent of asking "Does that mean it's free?" when a cashier has trouble scanning a barcode.
I'd at least want an interviewee to try to be original without defaulting to the "clever" answer they saw recommended online.
That's a really good point. You definitely don't want to be "that guy".
I mean, sure, dress it up a bit but the spirit of that idea is just fine to me. Something like:
Interviewer: "Where do you see yourself in five years?"
Applicant: "At that point I'll have 5 more years experience. I'll have explored this position in all of its depths, and after attaining mastery, I'll have advanced. Its important to me to always be working toward a further goal. If both you and I make the best choices, I believe I'll have a good chance to be in your position after a number of years of learning under you after you have advanced from the position you hold today into higher a higher leadership position."
