Most of the problems in the world can be traced back to the general attitude of Thatcher and Reagan. Any time travellers looking to maximize their impact on the timeline would be well served by preventing the backsliding those economics-koolaid-drinking sociopathic liars forced upon society.

I think a time traveler should go further back. Give John Brown some modern rifles and a fuckload of ammo, see what happens.
