And they all act like a hive mind, massive circle jerk?
This happened a few weeks ago when a bunch of people from reddit first started hopping over. They gave some reasons for why they were doing it. Like how they want to curate a specific type of instance, keep it smaller, they don't want people that have very different opinions from them because they want a safe space, moderating was becoming a challenge. Some people from other instances were saying that Beehaw seems like they want a walled garden. It's too bad because they had some good communities.
So we are just gonna let them do their thing? This sounds like a good opportunity for a sabotage multi-instance lemmy war
Yeah, they can do their thing. If you want to interact with their content you can make an account with them (if they let you in) or make an account on an instance that is still federated with them. If you go to beehaw.org, scroll down to instances at the very bottom right of the screen, then you can scroll the complete list of all federated and blocked instances.
Ah, now I'm beginning to get the zest of it. So any federated instance will let me post comment or view any instance that it's federated wth. Doesn't this allow for total isolation of some messed-up instances like the NSFW subreddits
Sure, I guess it could if every single Lemmy instance defederated them or vice versa. I'm still learning too.
Huh, do we know how this connection works? Like, if I don't wanna be in a federation of instances can I be my own separate instance or can anyone federated anyone
I'm pretty sure anyone can create their own instance. Not sure how to go about that. I'm not interested in doing it so I haven't read about it. There are a lot of posts that have info about how all of this stuff works. [email protected]
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using an URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: [email protected]
I’m reluctant to bring over the reddit habit of saying “good bot”, but seriously, this is a good bot. Many of us don’t know the “tricks” of the Lemmyverse yet.
Yeah, that’s possible. You can create a totally private instance (where nobody who’s not a member can even see posts), or just an independent instance that isn’t federated with anyone. I personally don’t know anything else - I’m just paraphrasing someone more knowledgeable.
As for Beehaw, it’s the instance I use most. When they defederated, the mods gave trolls as the biggest reason (they are very transparent about their decision making, which I appreciate). They were simply overwhelmed with mod duties. There weren’t a lot of people running Beehaw (I don’t know if that’s changed in the last few weeks), and they defederated from the instances that most of the moderating workload came from. They said that defederating was a last resort, and hoped they’d be able to re-federate some day. We’ll see.
They are very serious about maintaining a civil atmosphere, but they’re not “word police”. Disagreements are fine as long as you’re not a dick about it. It’s not about what you say, so much as how you say it. If you’re not a rude, nasty person, it feels like any other instance. I’d recommend giving it a try!
Sounds cool, thanks for the insight!
You could compare it to some subreddits that were private long before the API debacle.
They wanted to curate a very specific community (subreddit) and didn't want folks with differing opinions inside.
Yeah, makes sense now. I never got into one so never thought about them much
Cuz that's how all wars in human history have begun
No. We don't ; -)
Aw come on, I thought I had found the only place where I could get jerked but nope
