The City of Sydney council will consider scrapping its contracts with companies linked to Israel, including a printing agreement with Hewlett Packard, after Lord Mayor Clover Moore supported a renewed push from the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement.

Moore and her independent team backed a Greens motion on Monday night calling for the state’s wealthiest council to audit divestments that had or could be made to ensure it did not invest in or profit from human rights violations, “including the illegal occupation of the settlements in Palestinian territories, and the supply of weapons”.

Missed this news yesterday. I guess “August” narrows it down from “mid-2024” although that’s basically end of mid year. I’m expecting late August.

Key paragraphs:

Almost 83,000 drivers have been caught speeding through a bustling Sydney tunnel – yet only 3000 have actually been issued fines.

The Rozelle Interchange in Sydney’s inner west opened six months ago, but according to a report from the ABC, while 82,658 drivers have been sent warnings by Transport for NSW, just 2851 have been hit with fines for going more than 30 km/h over the limit through the tunnel since January 25.

How complex is this tunnel???

NSW still requires surgeries that are often unwanted, complex, and have mixed results (particularly for ftm patients, unless they opt for steralisation instead which might count. mtf steralisation is mandatory), and tremendously expensive (not covered by medicare, in fact barely offered in australia at all especially for ftm people).

Further if you are fortunate enough to be able to do this you are required to be inspected by two unrelated medical professionals. I went through that process and it was the most humiliating moment of my life.

This policy is out of line with policy adopted by the federal government over a decade ago now, and is similar to policies previously enacted by Sweden and The Netherlands. Policies which they are currently apologising for and paying re-compensation to transgender people harmed by them.

Having ID which identifies someone as transgender causes ongoing dysphoria which runs contrary to treatment recommended by health professionals while exposing someone to violence and discrimination.

Chris Minns' words ring hollow when the state government continues to drag its feet on this front, despite support from the Greens and Alex Greenwich.

While I'm glad for any of my comrades getting a sense of closure, to me this leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and appears another empty political stunt of pretty words without commitment to action.

Police should be relegated to back-up support for mental health workers or not respond at all to call-outs for severely mentally ill people in crisis, a major NSW inquiry has concluded.

But the recommendation fell short of demanding the reform be urgently implemented despite the deaths of more than 50 people during or as a result of police responding to mental health emergencies across NSW in the past five years, and strong support from mental health experts, patients, families and police.

A vital step forward for Parramatta as Sydney's second CBD.

The old Riverside Theatre is frankly starting to show its age.

Having a modern venue for theatre, concerts, and live music in Western Sydney is an important investment for the arts.

Hornsby is the fifth best place to live in Australia, apparently.

At least, according to a study SGS Economics and Planning:

"Sydney's Northern beaches ranks as the highest in the nation for wellbeing, with only one Queensland city making it to the top 10, the annual index revealed today.

"The Australian Capital Territory came in second due to its low gender wage gaps, climate change risks and the division of wealth."

The study assessed 518 local council areas on seven indicators:

* economy
* income and wealth
* employment, knowledge and skills
* housing
* health
* equality, community and work-life balance
* environment

The top 10 local government areas are:

  1. Northern Beaches (Greater Sydney)

  2. Australian Capital Territory

  3. North Sydney (Greater Sydney)

  4. Ku-ring-gai (Greater Sydney)

  5. Hornsby (Greater Sydney)

  6. Lane Cove (Greater Sydney)

  7. Mosman (Greater Sydney)

  8. Sutherland (Greater Sydney)

  9. Sydney (Greater Sydney)

  10. Brisbane (Greater Brisbane)

On a normal day the L1 line is pretty full from central, but on a rainy day when no one wants to walk and, the light rail is running less frequently the trains are absolutely packed and people can’t get on after Capital Square or even Central. Hopefully the metro can take some load off or there’s another plan to increase capacity.
