It's Finally Happening: The Amiga Is Getting a Worthy OutRun Port after 36 Years!

After decades of waiting, it looks like the Amiga community is about to be treated to an authentic experience when Agermose, along with his team, brings out their own port of OutRun for the Commodore Amiga A1200.

This version promises to stick closer to the original 1986 arcade game, offering a significantly better experience compared to the notoriously poor US Gold port, which used an Atari ST conversion and was a real miss.

The team aims for an initial release that would only require an A1200 with some fast RAM. The goal is to eventually create a version that is fully compatible with the base Amiga 1200 system without extra hardware.

Do you plan to try this? Or will you just stick to the Cannonball engine Amiga port instead?

Sega's Shinobi Unofficially Ported to Neo Geo

Shinobi, the classic System 16 arcade title from 1987, has been ported to SNK's Neo Geo system by developer h0ffman. This port was achieved by disassembling the original arcade game back into source code, ensuring that all gameplay logic is exactly as in the original.

This development makes Shinobi available on a wider range of NeoGeo systems (MVS/AES/CD), and with plans to expand compatibility soon.

See the original article for an itch.io download link.

New ZX Spectrum Donkey Kong Out Now

The new ZX Spectrum port of Donkey Kong by developer Artonapilos has hit itch.io.

Along with many previous unofficial ports, this homebrew improves upon Ocean's notoriously poor official port (released 40 years ago). It’s available as a .TAP file with a minimum payment of 5 Euros if you have an original Spectrum, an emulator, or you're playing on Retro Games Ltd.'s The Spectrum machine.

Which version of Donkey Kong on the ZX Spectrum do you enjoy most?

This was printed in Playboy magazine in April 2001.

It's hard to explain to people who weren't around back then how loose the "rules" were for making games. Conker's Bad Fur Day was definitely trying to market itself as edgy, but aside from some faith-based groups who would be upset, nobody really cared.

The DOOM CAPTCHA is a unique verification method that requires users to play a small section of the classic DOOM game, defeating three monsters using just a pistol. This approach uses WebAssembly to run a mini-game directly in the browser.

  • Accessibility Concerns: Users may find it challenging, especially since it seems to use higher difficulty levels like Ultra-Violence or Nightmare.
  • Tech Community Reaction: The concept has gained traction online, with mixed reviews from users, who often describe it as 'fun but frustrating'.

While this system isn’t likely to replace traditional CAPTCHAs widely, it definitely adds an interesting twist.

Could you beat this CAPTCHA?

I used buttons for the Odin 2 Mini from SakuraRetroModding on Etsy. They fit without any modifications, except that the original buttons are glued to the membrane. Thankfully, it's easy to unglue them by cutting through the glue with nails.

Here is how the unglue process looks like. The video is for RP5, but the approach is the same for the Mini.

The new buttons are quieter, have a lower profile, and feel similar to an Xbox controller overall. I'm really happy with the mod!

After finishing Mario Kart Double dash, I decided to try Mario Kart DS as I never played that one.

I’m guessing that it had to do with the hardware, but the karts felt slow, so I moved on to Mario Kart 8.

I have to admit that this version of the game looks the best and the kart movement feels the best.

It’s such an improvement over Double Dash that I think I do in fact like it better. Especially at 200cc.

Thanks to a recent update to the WiiSX / CubeSX emulator, PlayStation 1 (PS1) games are now playable on the Nintendo GameCube, offering an exciting new way for retro gaming enthusiasts to experience classic titles.

I’ve been playing double dash recently and it seems like the least dumbed down Mario kart game.

I love that each racer has their own special, I love that you need to swap out the racers to actually get a second power up.

The game has been really fun. I just lost gold on special cup by 2 points. I did terribly on rainbow road with toad 😂

It's a very cool hack, highly recommend!

It lets you switch between 4 different characters on the map screen. Each one have unique physics and a special move. Also there is one additional unlockable character.

Bosses also very interesting. Each have unique mechanics. They are way harder then the original, but not super difficult.

What I didn't like is that many surfaces are slippery. It makes the game feel a bit unfair sometimes.

Retroachievements for this game are fine, but I disliked the speedrun and deathless one.

Here is the link to the patch.

The CE is a lower power version of what is now called the 4k Pro. It is priced at $475, which puts it more in direct competition with the morph paired with a analogue bridge (I think that bundle would be $350ish). RetroRGB has a nice break down of the differences (link in the article).

So quick history lesson:

Cadillacs and Dinisaurs started as an independent comic book called "Xenozoic Tales" by writer/artist Mark Schultz.

It first appeared as a short story in the comic "Death Rattle" #8 before having it's own 14 issue run from 1987 to 1996.

In 1990, Marvel reprinted the first 6 issues under the more marketable title "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs."

In 1993, there was a 13 episode animated cartoon.

In 1994, Topps comics picked up the license and did 9 issues, with Mark Schultz serving as a consultant but not the writer or artist.

The Sega CD game came out in 1994 in conjunction with the Topps series.

I'm setting up my MiSTer FPGA and want to prioritize a bit. I currently have DOS and Win 95 running, but plan to setup Macintosh and any other worthwhile computer platforms. Any computer platform welcome (I already have the consoles figured out). What are your "must try" game suggestions?

Edit: I just got back to this post and am pleasantly surprised by the response. I'll probably be adding most if not all of these to test since I have the space. Thank you to everyone who commented.
