I have a 250 GB M.2 SSD in which Windows is installed and a 1 TB M.2 to store my games and stuff. Now the 1 TB is out of space and I'm buying another 2 TB drive, but I don't know if I should clone the 250 GB to the 1 TB and move the contents in the 1 TB to the new 2 TB stick, or just buy a SATA SDD for the same price.

I can have faster write/read speed with the 1st option but with I only get 1 more TB of storage, while the second option gives 2 TB at the cost of speed.

Which way should I go? Both the M.2 and SATA I'm planning on buying have the same price and I mainly use the PC to play games. I play FO4 and I have a lot of mods installed (like over 500) so I need space but I don't know if the speed trade-off is worth it.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the 250GB has the fastest write/read speed.

I'll be brief. I've been looking for a mic for a long time now. My current one started dying and is really bad.

All I'd like is some shock absorption, for keyboard and stuff to not be earrape.

Some sort of mic arm, I wouldn't like to take space up infront of my keyboard, and to put it behind it would probably be a bad idea.

On another note is: please don't say HyperX, I don't really like that brand.

mt budget is: as cheap as possible, but still not shit quality, AKA whatever you'd buy

In January I replaced my 5 year old GTX 1080 Ti with an Asus ROG TUF OC 4090. My old 1080 Ti never had an official waterblock made for it by anyone, so I was never able to incorporate it into my loop. I made sure that whatever model of 4090 I got, it had to have waterblock support from more than just one vendor. I'm finally done with my system. For now anyways. After years of tweaking, upgrades, and loop rebuilds, I'm happy with how it looks, and how it performs.

Specs

  • Case: Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus X570 Master
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB (4 x 8GB)
  • GPU: Asus ROG TUF OC 4090
  • NVMe #1 - 1TB Western Digital Black SN850 (OS & Applications)
  • NVMe #2 - 2TB Western Digital Black SN850X (Steam Library)
  • Corsair Hydro X D5 Pump
  • Alphacool Strix/TUF 4090 Block
  • Optimus PC Foundation AM4 CPU Block
  • 2 x Alphacool NexXxoS XT45 Full Copper 360mm Radiator
  • Bitspower fittings

There's a good chance however that next year when the Ryzen 8000 chips come out I'll upgrade my platform to that. But for now I can finally enjoy the months of hard work and waiting for parts.

Last week I applied liquid metal for the first time ever and it’s been running great! The GPU runs a lot quieter now and cooler!

Honestly, I don’t know why I did it. Could’ve very easily lost a grand.

Nigh all media is 16:9. What's this obsession people have with 16:10? Isn't it inconvenient to have black bars along your videos and pictures?

I have a duplicate key for that game, so I am giving one away for free. I played this game already and I think it was good: https://store.steampowered.com/app/746850/Cloudpunk/

To get the key you have to submit your email here: https://www.humblebundle.com/gift?key=ZWyyc2Su7BNBpr7z You might have to register too, I don't know.

First come - first serve.

I see the Palit Jetstream RTX 4080 is the cheapest 4080, and I'm wondering if anyone has experience of it? Have they cut corners to make it this cheap, and is it still a solid card? Thanks.

List of parts/peripherals

This is my first setup since moving away from home and into my own place with my partner. I finally had the ability to setup my Raspberry Pi running Plex, qBittorrent, and a Samba share. We use Plex more than we use Apple TV or Netflix at this point because it is just so much less of a hassle, and we would cancel them immediately if we did not get them free with our phone plan.

I have my work Macbook and PC both connected to a KVM to easily switch between the two. I run both Win10Pro and ZorinOS in dual-boot, but I primarily use Windows as the last thing I want to do after work most days is write code (I'm a software engineer). Recently my PC's primary use has been to stream games to my Steam Deck that it is not powerful enough to run. My partner and I spend a good amount of time on the couch playing our own games next to each other as they've recently taken over the living room TV with their PC to play their millionth run of Stardew Valley.

I've mostly been playing Tetris Effect Connected but I just finally got around to starting RDR2, so that will probably take over soon enough. I also jump between The Binding of Isaac, Borderlands 2, and Minecraft quite a bit.

I added some more pictures below. The decorations around my desk are nothing spectacular, but they are all things that make me happy, and I don't like to be surrounded by too much unnecessary clutter. If you have any questions about my setup feel free to ask!

Hey guys, my PC is getting kind of "old" and i'm thinking about upgrading it, considering the performance is starting to feel subpar.

I feel like the CPU is causing most of the problems but i'm not quite sure, and would like some advice as to what needs upgrading most. Here are the specs :

  • CPU : Ryzen 3 1300X
  • Motherboard : MSI B350 Gaming Plus
  • RAM : 16GB of DDR4 2133MHz RAM (2*8)
  • GPU : Geforce GTX 1060 6GB

Thanks for your insights !

Hey guys, I have Corsair RM550x that is turning on/off its fan in 65-70 min cycles when PC is on idle. When PSU fan is off I meassure 31W from wall and 21W when fan is off. Other PSUs are not like that and they are around 25W. Funny thing is that fan shouldnt even spin below 220W iirc and I found it hillarius that its using less power when fan is on. PC is working fine, but is this normal?

Edit: specs - MSI Z270-A PRO, intel G3930, 8gb ram, 2 sata SSD and no GPU

Edit 2:

Thank you all for helping me out!

I believe that no flow in case caused PSU overheating and due to lower efficiency at higher temp PSU was using more power. Enabling case fans with small positive pressure fixed the problem immediately and now its stable at 24W on idle. On the next diagram PC was idle for only short period of time, so you can also see power curve when it was running some services, but still "much" less than 30 W.

Edit 3: Before this post I asked Corsair about that, but got only bot level responses. Conversation was going in circle and then I gave up :D

First time I've seen a stencil for thermal paste. Pretty slick. Also hoping the CPU bracket prevents any bending issues. Probably wasn't going to be an issue but for $7 worth it.

This is my main PC and last time I rebuilt it was 6 years ago. Not going for a huge rig as I don't game all that often. The RX 7600 is twice as fast as my previous GPU and I only paid $260 for it. If I can get another 6 years out of it that will be plenty.

Full specs:

  • Intel Core i7-12700KF
  • Gigabyte Radeon RX 7600 Gaming OC 8G
  • MSI MAG B760 Tomahawk WiFi DDR4
  • Thermaltake TOUGHAIR 510 180W TDP CPU Cooler
  • G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB
  • dual Samsung 980 PRO 2TB

Because the battlestations community is empty thanks to a community squatter I figure this is the next place for this kind of thing.

I had been using a light and flimsy IKEA table for a long time and decided it was time to get some real solid wood. Pretty expensive stuff, but it feels so much better. The tabletop isn't even that big, but it weighs about 70 lbs. Far less likely to move around by getting bumped.

Obligatory cat.

  • Case: Fractal Design Ridge
  • CPU: Intel i5-9600k
  • GPU: RTX 3070 ti
  • Storage: 4 terabytes of SSDs.

Temps are surprisingly stable for how compact things are. Having a low TDP cpu definitely helps. The GPU has no thermal problems at all due to the two large 140mm fans that suck air straight through the case.

Hi, I'm looking to get a laptop Dock that will use USB-C connection from my laptop. I then want to plug into the Dock. 2 1080p hdmi monitors, Ethernet and whatever USB stuff like keyboard and mouse. Etc.

My question is. Would the Dock require its own power supply to work correctly, or would the power coming from the laptop be enough.

My work laptop is USB-C powered. So I guess I may be able to plug that into the Dock and then the Dock into the charger port of the laptop? But my personal laptop is not C powered, so I'm worries if that would caus3 damage if I plugged the Dock into my personal laptop when it is getting power from the mains? (This is based on docks that have pass through power like this one https://amzn.eu/d/ghJLmhP)

Thank you

Hello,

I recently bought a used 3070 TI online, and thought I should come here to ask for some advice. The GPU I have currently I bought new from a retail store, so I didn't have much need to verify it.

I am aware there are resellers out there with more shady interests, and sometimes "hack" a gpu chip to show up as, for example, a 3070 TI when it is really a [ insert any other inferior gpu here].

My question is, how do I test this 3070 TI to ensure it is, in fact, a 3070 TI and not something pretending to be one. My best guess is to run a benchmark and compare my scores to others with similar hardware, but there's got to be a better way?

First off, tons of people adopted the name and have accepted the existing and earned elitism that goes along with the name.

Personal computers ARE a superior platform and the users ARE and SHOULD be elitist about it for very good reasons: they pay like 10x more. Forcing that image of elite to the forefront all but ensures that the idea that if you spend more you should get more. And in a time where microtransactions and other incredibly abusive and predatory industry practices are taking advantage of gamers without serving them actually good content is on an alarmingly fast rising trend that's set to be the redefinition of gaming VERY SOON, we all need to be fighting for better quality of content, and let the undercutting that brings down price happen later, which is an unfortunate series of truths.

"PC Master Race" is attractive to those who want more and feel good about it, and it's out there. Whether or not we change the name here on Lemmy, is not going to affect that meme. I'm all for coming up with new names, but, unless there are actual fascist behaviors emerging or being actually attracted to the communities and platforms, I very seriously doubt PCMR is going anywhere, anytime soon.

EDIT:
Also, I want to add that, Linux people are even moreso pcmr than most pcmr and nobody thinks they're actual Nazis. Largely people recognize them as mostly power users, which, in the gaming space, often pc users ARE.

The difference is that, Linux users, and pc users in general, WANT you to join us because it makes us ALL stronger. Nazism and fascism is... exclusionary, but console wars stuff is about as serious as sports teams being angry at each other. And even then, pcmr is about deliberance and technology and intelligence, even going as far as to self-depricate if elitism gets too pretentious:

Getting too full of yourself? Blindly following others? Spending tons of money and getting nothing for it? You must be: PCMR!!

Because at the end of the day, people just wanna play video games, and you buy what you can buy, and console peasants and PCMR are still eclipsed by mobile games, the true dregs of gaming society. 🙃
