Hello fellow lemmings!

I am in need of some advice on how to expand/coordinate my workstation.

I currently have 2 monitors and 2 laptops with 1 docking station that I switch back and forth between (I do have a second Bluetooth mouse that I connect to the laptop that is not currently connected to the docking station, if I need to).

I would like to have 4 monitors by the upcoming tax season. Also, I would like the option to expand to a total of 3 laptops within a couple years.

I have looked into KVM switches and the only one that I can find for 4 monitors and 2 computers is upwards of $800. Is there a KVM switch out there for 4 monitors and 3 computers, or is this just a pipedream?

What other solutions should I consider? When I expand to 3 computers in the upcoming years, would having 2 workstations be cheaper/more efficient?

I'm not very tech savvy so please bear with me.

I bought a premade in 2018 and I've only updated the graphics card and ram since then. I'm using a 55" Samsung TV as a monitor. It's really starting to get sluggish/finicky. Gaming example: it can run BGate3 on medium but starts having issues any higher.

  • Processor: Intel Core i3-8100 Coffee Lake CPU, 4 Cores, 3.6GHz
  • Graphics Card NIVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8gb
  • CPU Cooler: Intel Stock CPU Cooler
  • Motherboard: ASUS Z370-P Motherboard
  • Memory: 8GB DDR4 2400MHz Memory (2 x 4GB Sticks) + Crucial Ballistix BL2K8G36C16U4B 3600 MHz, DDR4, DRAM, Desktop Gaming Memory Kit, 16GB (8GB x2), CL16, Black
  • Hard Drive: Seagate 2TB Firecuda Hybrid Hard Disk

EDIT for more info

It's hooked up to my TV because I use it for everything from simple browsing, YouTube, streaming TV/movies, to gaming. For games the most taxing is something like BG3, but I can't think of anything else in terms of taxing programmes.

I don't think I'd have a use for it if I kept it. Even if I kept the hard drive I'd have to research How and What To Save To Which Drive On Your PC, but if that's what y'all recommend then I can.

I'm not against investing a few grand if it's the right money spent at the right time, if that makes sense? My worry about changing individual parts is the standard worries about installation and compatibility, but if it's too soon to be changing the whole rig then I can get over that

Are there any fields, where USB A surpasses USB C, or is C an absolute upgrade?

I recently upgraded my PC from Ryzen 3600 and 3060 Ti to 5700x3d and 4080 Super. It works absolutely great, but I'm worried about the temps. Both my CPU and GPU get to about 85c max, 70-75c avarage running Cyberpunk 2077. I'm a bit worried as people report about 70-75c, not 85...

For cooling-relevant stuff, I've got a Phanteks P400S TG, 3 fans(1x120 in the back, 1x120 and 1x140 in the front) of meh quality, an absolute unit of a CPU cooler - dual tower, two fans, copper base, copper pipes, but from a local & budget (but renowned) manufacturer, the honeywell thermal pad (I know there are fakes, mine looked good but could a fake cause 10-15c temps increase?). Ambient temp is not an issue, it's at most 22c.

I'm running the GPU without any overclock or undervolt and I've applied MSI Kombo Strike 3 to the CPU.

I've got Fan Control running with auto settings, case fans to 100% at 85(either CPU or GPU), GPU to 100% at 85, CPU to 100% at 80.

If the temps are an issue, my best guess is I somehow messed up the thermal pad application, the case fans are not up to the task (especially with how the case restricts airflow from the front and the fans are only about ~1200RPM at 100%) or the GPU is pushing warm air up to the CPU. Any clues if that's an issue and if so, what's the cause?

I don't really know where to start. It's not hurting me, but I'm confused. I don't recall doing anything different o not sure where to start looking for issues.

It boots up, shows me my drives and says "settings were reset to default values" If I go into bios, nothing looks off to me. Windows doesn't show an issue.

I'm running Win10. I can give you all the info you want. Just need a hint as to where to start looking. Thanks

I’ve been wanting to build a Pc for a while now and had been hoping to build one with better specs than the ps5. Now that we know what to expect from the PS5 pro as well as the price ($700) I’m curious what a similar or somewhat superior pc build would cost and what kind of parts I would want to look at? I know you can’t make something that’s going to perform exactly the same but I’m curious regardless. Honestly I’ll probably be going higher-end than that (~$1500 range) but it seems like a good starting point.

Hey Everyone!

You probably saw my post a few weeks back where I am giving away some Steam codes for a bunch of games: https://lemmy.world/post/18183898

I've been really tied up handling some personal things so I have not been able to start drawing codes on Sep 1st like I planned. However, everything's good on my side, so I'll start drawing winners now!

While all the details are in the original post linked above, here's the main bullet points people will care about:

  • If you are a winner, I will @ mention you in the comments to the original post.
  • I will also send you a Direct Message
  • You will have 48 hours to claim.
  • I also ask that you confirm back to me that you were successful, and it would be great if you post a comment saying you claimed it for transparency. (Optional of course, you don't have to do anything you don't want to do.)
  • If the winner does not get back to me with a reasonable 48 hours, I will redraw.
  • I will continue redrawing until game codes are exhausted and all codes have been claimed.

All winners will be notified on the original post, not this post.

Therefore, go here: https://lemmy.world/post/18183898

I will also edit the original post with updates so that everyone can keep track of the winners and codes.

For the upcoming winter holiday, I might check and see if any people out there want to collaborate on donating a bunch of keys and then we do a massive games giveaway. People have been messaging me periodically about something like this, and I think it'd be cool to organize. Might have to work it out with the Admins of Lemmy.World, but let's see.

Good luck to the winners, and again, very sorry that I wasn't able to start drawing the winners until slightly over a week later!

Hiya!

I am slowly transitioning to a wireless desktop setup and I am looking for a simple and suitable usb hub which can accommodate, at least, a wireless mouse and keyboard.

I am having trouble finding what I am looking for, so here I am hoping that you guys/gals can help me.

Why I think I need a hub; I want to keep the wireless dongles as far away from the pc/other devices and other cables to limit the distance and interference. The back usb slots are quite full with cables for an audio stack, gamepad, gamecontroller stream deck and (sometimes) a webcam. I am also rocking a Fractal Torrent case, which has deep incline to where the back slots are, making a clear "line of sight" from dongle to device impossible.

What I would like is a simple, minimal hub with just a couple of usb3.0 ports and nothing else and with high data transfer speed, as I figure that would be most beneficial for two input devices.

I can only find either articles about wireless devices and hubs or hubs with also hdmi/dp, Ethernet, SD card slots etc.

Does anyone have a recommendation or advice?

Thanks in advance!

Recently I decided to upgrade from an ancient gtx 1070 to an rx 7700 xt.

At first I was very excited about the upgrade... However I experienced something that is becoming a huge turn off for me. The drivers seem to just... Suck... To the point where I'm considering returning the gpu and going back to an nvidea gpu. And I don't want to be the guy to be a gpu brand shill.

I had done my research, I did hear the drivers used to suck. And people claimed it no longer sucked. Just within a day of having my new card I feel like I was lied to.

Granted yes, the hardware itself is amazing and I definitely experienced huge improvements already. But having to juggle around an older driver so I can have a stable encoder to stream VR games to my quest (which now that I'm thinking of, if the encoder crashes so easily then OBS must experience issues to), but then need to upgrade my driver version cause otherwise my switch emulator times out the driver and causes it to crash the PC, and even when upgrading the driver again I expirience artifacts in emulation (ok granted it's EMULATION so I can't really blame amd on that one). I feel like I made the wrong decision and I'm not excited to see what bugs feature drivers may come with.

Anyway malding post is over. I wanted to make a discussion on this thread to ask about your experience with AMD. Maybe I am overthinking this. Or maybe this is a more widespread issue that needs to be talked about more still.

Just after some advice... So I recently upgraded to a 4k monitor & my trusty old 3070 struggles in certain situations. Would you all upgrade for a 4070ti super now, or wait it out to see what the 5070 offers? I kind of need it now if I'm to enjoy my monitor in it's full glory, but I can wait it out if it won't be too long, but I guess we still don't know when the 50xx will be released.

  • Hardware: Intel Core i3-6100U, 8 GiB RAM, Intel HD 520
  • Software: Fedora Linux 40, Proton 8, Mesa 24.1.6
  • Game Settings: DX12, frame gen off, FSR, everything on low/off, 720p windowed with %100 resolution.

Game did not start before renaming folder Engine/Plugins/Runtime/Nvidia. I was stuck at a black screen. I obviously did not expect good performance, I just wanted to see if I could run the benchmark.

I got a Turris Omnia Router, which I want to use as a NAS.

I also really like SATA SSDs, they are abundant (I have too many), never overheat (take that, NVME crap) etc.

The router is pretty tight, a SATA SSD fits in, but I need a cable to have the adapter 90° and a bit upwards.

Now I wonder, what adapter do I need? On AliExpress I find one with 1 or 2 SATA connections, 1 is probably best for sanity and reliability.

This one looks more sketchy, as it has 2 SATA sockets.

Hey y'all, I bought a x4x4x4x4 4 slots M.2 PCIe card foolishly thinking that if it fits in the slot, it would surely work. In the end, I got 2 of the 4 SSDs working on my old AM4 X470 chipset. I'm coming to you for advice what the cheapest way to get to use this would be. I've noticed that a lot of CPUs have a PCIe lane limitation of 28, just short of what I need (I'd like to run the SSDs but also a x16 GPU). I'm not too keen to buy a threadripper setup for this occasion...

Cheers!

This poor laptop drive was serving me well as a jank storage pool on my Nas for almost 8 years now and today it died.

Edit: Coasters and fridge magnets acquired

I'm thinking of upgrading my old 75hz qhd monitor for the Alienware oled 4k 240hz AW3225QF. However, I'm using an RTX3070 right now & don't want to upgrade until the release of the 5070. Does anyone have the Alienware already who can speak to how it looks with games running at qhd resolutions on the 4k screen?

For something that I had to import from Germany because the RGB version wasn't being sold in the states at the time and was supposedly supposed to die within <2 years because the RGB made it run too hot, it lasted 5 years and 72 TBs written before a random power outage took it down. Even then, it was still able to allow me to dd it to another drive without issue

RIP :(
