This community was essentially unmoderated for a while and I've been recently approached to take over moderation duties here. What I don't intend to do is to change any existing rules here but to enforce what has piled up in the moderation queue.

The discussion under the recent post about spam accounts turned into a flamewar regarding US domestic politics which has literally nothing to do with the Fediverse.

With dozens of comments, I don't have the bandwidth to sift through them individually and I've locked the thread. The PSA about spam accounts still stands which is why I didn't remove the post. The accounts involved with that flamewar get a pass for this time. Consider this a warning. Further trolling about US political parties will result in bans.

When you add an account to your list, do they get notified like on twitter? Or do they know at all that they are on any list?

i've looked online for a bit but i don't seem to find the answers i want, they just exolain what lists do

Mastodon Starter Packs (fosstodon.org)
submitted 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) by [email protected] to c/fediverse

Post content:

I've been building starter packs for Mastodon in my spare time and today I want to share what I've built with the community:

https://fedidevs.com/starter-packs/

I've started building this when I saw how popular starter packs on Bluesky are and I think a feature like this is even more critical for Mastodon where it's harder to find people to follow across thousands of instances.

Only a small number starter packs are available right now, but I'm hoping the community will add more soon! ❤️

This is the first time I'm seeing a way to host a full Bluesky network, I think. It seems like a big step towards full federation beyond appviews and personal data servers.

Note that accounts on both networks must follow the main bridge account to work.

I recently made an mbin account bc I like the idea of one account that does both threads and microblogs (only want microblog for a couple mastodon people, don't want to need multiple accounts). So far I'm finding the setup of mbin in general a little confusing, and I can't join their matrix for some reason.

I also want to know if there is any way to show the entire picture on threads in interstellar, as it currently shows the middle third, and I'd rather see the whole image while scrolling. I know the app is capable of it since it does that on microblogs. Also, are there any mbin apps (preferably for Android) other than interstellar?

These are starting to really stack up with the nutty mods in some of these places and I'd like to keep score and perhaps display them somewhere. I'm wondering if there's a list?

If not, short of crawling every community findable by an account and checking banned status by e.g. attempting to post, is there a way to collate such a list programmatically with e.g. an API or cURL or selenium automation, given the structure of the fediverse?

The version 1.3.0 of Fedify, an ActivityPub server framework, released! The key changes include:

For details, see the full changelog as well!

Fedify 1.3.0 is available at JSR and npm.

The linked post shows how most non-tech people's understanding of email is very very different from most of the people here.

I would imagine the most expensive part is the storage space perhaps Peertube instances can function as cooperatives for content creators where they pool their resources to kickstart their own independent video platform free from censorship and frivolous corporate takedowns.

What’s better than pie?

Being part of the #OpenSocialWeb where billionaires can’t manipulate us with algorithms and we don’t need blocklists to keep the losers away.

Here are the problems I want to solve:

The same app everywhere

It will run as a website, iOS app (also on macOS), and Android app. It will be responsive, supporting phone, tablet, and computer screen sizes along with everything in between.

And I’m not talking about simply resizing the interface. Navigation (e.g. sidebar or on mobile bottom tab bar) will match what you would expect to see on the device size you’re using. But everything else (e.g. posts) will look the same, which I hope will make it really easy to jump from mobile to desktop.

Onboarding and configuration

The app will allow you to configure it to look like a typical Reddit or Lemmy app. During the onboarding process, I will prompt you, asking which style of interface you prefer. Consider these presets, which change a bunch of more granular configuration options. I will also give you the ability to fully customize each option instead of picking a preset.

Caching and offline support

This is where it starts to get more tricky. Caching is easy. If you launch the app, it will have everything you previously saw still loaded.

I would like to make it so upvoting, for example, can be done offline. The app will optimistically apply the upvote to the post or comment, then when you reconnect to the internet, it will actually apply the upvote. This is a difficult problem to solve, so I can’t promise this will work, and it would likely be the last feature I add.

I need your feedback

This is a big project to undertake. I really want a Lemmy client that checks those boxes for myself, but I’m curious if any of those resonate with you? Is there anything I missed that you would like to see? If I do build this, I will likely have to keep the project very focused as far as features go initially.

Just for context, I’m using Voyager on iOS currently. I really like it, but the “the same app everywhere” concept and making it easier to onboard Reddit users are my main motivations for creating my own app. My app will also be fully open source

When making a new post, I often can't remember right away which community it would be most relevant to. Sometimes it's pretty obvious, but other times I have to scroll through the list and find the one I'm looking for or one that might be a good fit.

Now, I know that there are specific communities like [email protected] that is for this purpose as well, but I was wondering if it would be useful to have a simple automated solution sort of like how github searches for issues to see if your question (post) has already been asked.

I'd be curious to know other's thoughts on the matter and if you think something like this could be a helpful addition or not.

Here is an example link (edit: I originally had this example link, which also has the issue but then does not match the same posting as the other links below so the first one would have been better). Apologies in advance that the content of this video is political, but you can pause it immediately and not watch if you prefer yet still see the effect.

Caveats:

  1. on most desktop browsers I have tried the auto-play is blocked; however in Firefox on Android it auto-plays with sound. For me, (edit: whoops what happened to the word "Chrome") shows the video embed yet pauses it, properly refusing to allow it to play unless I hit the giant Play button in the center. It has been too long but this may not be standard behavior for Chrome, although I did confirm this effect on 2 different devices from different manufacturers (yet if I made any configuration changes in the past to block auto-playing videos, I definitely would have done it to both:-P).
  2. Lemmy.World users are safe for now, as too are users on sh.itjust.works, both presumably b/c they are instances not yet running the latest Lemmy code - though note that that just means that it is coming for you eventually, even if not quite here yet
  3. none of PieFed, ~~Mbin~~ (edit: apparently this one does too, after a fashion, read in comments below), or Tesseract auto-play videos either, or as I mentioned seemingly any Lemmy instance prior to 0.19.6, though e.g. viewing this post from lemm.ee, the 3rd largest Lemmy instance, auto-plays it. Others that auto-play it include view this post from Discuss.Online, view this post from StarTrek.Website.
  4. Edit: an interesting wrinkle, sometimes when you click the link directly, the video does not auto-play (most desktop situations seem this way, and some mobile devices too). But if you navigate to that post more naturally, e.g. click the link to the community first, then find the post (although note in this case that there are many posts describing this situation, e.g. have the word "ceasefire" in them) and click the link to it (or just hit the back button), then the video does auto-play.

This troubles me. Once again this kind of opt-out behavior offered "for my convenience" reminds me of some other place... although even Reddit offers the option to stop the auto-play feature (except for ads I suppose), whereas I see no such option in Lemmy (the closest would be "Auto expand media", which I have set to OFF). The number of places - like Netflix - that offers these kinds of “well ackshually these are not ads you see b/c..." really is off-putting to me.

The more you know I suppose.

During the summer the European Commission made the decision to stop funding Free Software projects within the Next Generation Internet initiative (NGI). This decision results in a loss of €27 million for software freedom. Since 2018, the European Commission has supported the Free Software ecosystem through NGI, that provided funding and technical assistance to Free Software projects. This decision unfortunately exposes a larger issue: that software freedom in the EU needs more stable, long-term financial support. The ease with which this funding was excluded underlines this need.
