Rom 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. Rom 8:1 THERE is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Has your stomach ever been so full that you were miserable? If so, you know that, at that moment, it is easy to push away even your most favorite food in disgust; but when hungry, your tongue can find even the blandest food exploding with delectable flavor.

So it is with Scripture, which when you think yourself full of understanding or a good person, you easily find Scripture a chore to read; but, if you confess your sin before God, maintaining a hunger for righteousness, even the most difficult morsel of God's Word will explode in your mind with new understanding and wisdom in your heart.

All Sin

1 John 2:2 (KJV) And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

This short verse gives us a lot to consider. Jesus Christ did not die for some sinners. Or for some sins, but not die for others. Jesus Christ died as a shed-blood sacrifice for all sin. That implication is problematic when wrapping our minds around it. Yes, it is difficult to understand that God sent His Only Son to die for the bank robber as well as the hard-working bank teller. Or the victim who gets their purse stolen, or the thief who runs away into the night.

Indeed, our thinking cannot override God’s goodness. If it could, we might be inclined to dish out the salvation message to some, but not all, folks. Our finite thinking allows for differences in people and degrees of sin, with some seen as big sins and others (ours) as minor sins. Yes, it is hard to point the finger at ourselves, but it is easy to wag our finger toward another’s sin.

Let this vital message seep into your mind and soul: God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for all sin, past, present, and future. God does not discriminate among sinners but wants to be the Savior of all humanity.

Despite Suffering

1 Thessalonians 1:6 (KJV) And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:

Isn’t it wonderful that the salvation of a soul is not limited by circumstances, afflictions, and suffering? God can swoop in and change the spiritual condition of a soul from standing in opposition to Him to standing in spiritual agreement with Him. It is often true that a meeting with God comes in the most challenging times, not during fun, rest, and relaxation. Each person has a limit of what they can try to handle apart from God and has a different level for falling apart. This is why this verse speaks about much affliction, as typically, a person must come to the end of themselves before they can meet God.

Yes, despite the pain each child of God faces when they try to do things on their own, once they recognize God, seeing Him for the first time, all other things at work in their life dim in comparison to Him and the truth of His Word. Think of Saul actively searching out followers of God and seeking their harm and imprisonment instead of identifying the value God places on each person. Then, one day, God stops Paul on the road and causes him to drop to the ground upon meeting Him personally. God does not make his life easy once he knows the truth; instead, he changes his name to Paul and is with him through a myriad of troubling situations and even times of danger and near-death experiences as Paul chooses to live for God.

Just the same, each person experiences much affliction in their journey but has the joy of the Lord at work despite the hardships and trials they face as they walk with God and sojourn on this wicked earth for a time.

Fear of God

Exodus 20:18-21 (KJV) And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

This scripture poignantly pictures the fear of these ancient people. We can understand the thunder and lightning as we experience thunderstorms, which must be similar today. The noise and light from storms can be a frightening experience, especially when put together with a smoking mountain where Moses went to meet with God. These ancient people had front-row seats to watch as Moses climbed this mountain and disappeared in the thick darkness. They were not familiar with this kind of atmosphere and events, like the heavenly playing of the trumpet, and they struggled to maintain a sense of calmness amidst these spectacular events.

Though Moses tries to reassure the people not to be afraid as he meets with God, many people are beside themselves with fear. They are especially fearful of a holy God, not knowing what He will say or do. God speaks with Moses, giving him the Ten Commandments as the people stand below, waiting for Moses to return.
